Former League of Ireland man, Jack Byrne has been under scrutiny in recent months after his transfer from Shamrock Rovers to Cypriot side APOEL FC hasn't exactly gone to plan.
The Republic of Ireland midfielder flew overseas in a bid to play more European football while playing in sunny Cyprus. A fan favourite in Tallaght, his absence has been missed by Rovers supporters, however, we feel his reasons have been understood by the fans. Former Republic of Ireland boss, Mick McCarthy was a major factor in Byrne's decision to make the move. Timing was not his forte as McCarthy got the boot from the job a day after his first match involvement. Game time has proven to be scarce after the new appointment.
Luck has been a word that Byrne has not resembled with during his time with Apoel. This time, injury is the culprit. Back surgery was the solution to his problem but unfortunately costs him playing in the remainder of the Cypriot season. Jack uploaded Instagram stories post-surgery and he looks to be staying positive given the circumstances.
Jack has been no stranger to being in the limelight on the League of Ireland stage, however, the question is can he do the same in Cyprus and the international stage? After watching him live in action a number of times as opposing fans, we've no doubt he can be a top-class player. Byrne's history playing overseas hasn't exactly showcased his true worth after returning home to Dublin after spells in various clubs such as Manchester City and Oldham Athletic. Maybe homesickness has been the cause of these poor spells.

We at Pitchside Guide have our doubts on how the rest of his time in Cyprus is going to pan out. From a Republic of Ireland fan's point of view, we believe he can be a future regular in the side. Realistically, a future move to the Championship or regular game time in the APOEL side is going to be the most promising position for Byrne to ensure regular international football. If luck continues to say otherwise, we feel another transfer will be his best bet.
Jack will have to miss the first set of World Cup Qualifiers but let's see what the future holds once he gets back playing club football. We wish Jack a smooth recovery and hope to see him out playing in the Aviva soon!
